Project Statement

The project is now in its third year — documenting the experiences of extremely low income children in Antigua, Guatemala, as they attend a free, alternative, private, remedial school that allows them to catch up with their peers through an accelerated curriculum so that they can pass a primary school certification test, without which they would have no chance advancing in life. Most of these children are behind in their grade class placement, and almost all of them work during the morning and early afternoon to support their families. The Guatemalan Children’s Initiative just opened a secondary school to allow them to continue on with their educations. The purpose of the project is to develop collateral, give the children positive images of themselves, and break down the wall that makes them invisible to society relative to the rest of Antiguan youth, who go openly and proudly to public schools.
