Recent Photographic Project

Far and away, my most compelling experience has been photographing Cuba. As an artist, what matters to me most is creating images that evoke the spirit of the person, place, or event. In the Havana Collection, what I found to be true about Cubans is their pride in themselves, their country, and their ability to make the most of life despite serious economic limitations. Habaneros endure like the old American cars they keep running and the once grand now faded buildings in which they live.

Project Statement

More than fifty years after the revolution that put Fidel Castro in power,
Cuba still facinates. The country, forbidden to most Americans, just 91
miles off our coast, intrigues us. The opportunity to photograph the daily
lives of Cubans drew four women from Santa Fe to Havana. As artists
we all had a keen interest in seeing and reflecting the reality of Cuba today,
as Fidel's regime winds down, and something else, not yet defined, begins to
emerge. My work is primarily about connecting with Habaneros in their environment.
